Liquefaction

This is an image of the 1964 Niigata Earthquake which experienced liquefaction. Liquefaction is when soil is essentially turned into a liquid and buildings will tilt and sink. This occurs most often in less dense ground, such as sand. The Niigata earthquake was the earthquake that really brought the idea of liquefaction to the minds of engineers.
