River Landforms - Oxbow Lakes

Oxbow lakes are created by mature meandering rivers when the main part of the stream is eventually cut off by deposition of debris and sediments. These lakes are formed when the initial flow of water is abstructed, creating a second alternative way for the river to continue. They can also be created by floodwaters in low lying areas, usually where meandering rivers are found.
