Hurricane Irene originated just east of Lesser Antilles, a volcanic island arch in the western hemisphere, just north of South America and near the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Due to atmosphere convection, the tropical storm Irene was designated on August 20, 2011, and after much intensification, Irine made 4 landfalls in the Bahamas, strengthening to 195 km/h. After that, the forceful Category 1 hurricane hit North Carolina, and after becoming a tropical storm again, hit New Jersey and New York City, then remained inland as a tropical cyclone near Vermont. Hurricane Irene caused a considerable amount of damage, killing at least 56 people, and estimated 3.1 billion in the Caribbean, and a 7 billion dollar estimate in the United States. CBC reports the following about New York City during Irene: "New York City's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, said late Saturday night that it was not longer safe to be outdoors and that the edges of Hurricane Irene are reaching the city."
